Beware of Downed Lines

Spring storms can whip power lines from their poles and onto streets and even into your yard. Don’t touch them!

All wires and cables that are strung on a pole---including electric, telephone and cable TV lines, can become energized. If an energized wire hits the ground, it usually blows a fuse or trips a circuit. But it doesn’t, it remains “live,” and a live wire can kill.

Power lines are insulated with a thick cover to protect the wire---but the insulation will not protect you. The only way to stay safe when a power line falls is to stay far away from it.

Teach your children the same. If you see a downed line, call your electric cooperative to report it and warn others to keep their distance.
