Light Up Your Yard for a Safe and Fun Halloween
Get ready for Halloween visits from your neighborhood's little ghosts and goblins. Make your home a safe place for trick-or-treaters. Some tips:
- Turn on all of your outdoor lights. Be sure paths and sidewalks are well-lighted.
- Electric lights and candles are safer than real candles with flames.
- Make sure your lighted outdoor holiday decorations come with a label that says they're certified by a national testing laboratory, like Underwriters Laboratories, Inc.
- Remove obstacles from the front yard.
- Restrain dogs and other animals.
- Offer individually wrapped pieces of candy or hand out non-food treats like colorful stickers.
- If you host a Halloween party, make sure each adult leaves with a designated driver who has not been drinking.
For your own little firefighters and ballerinas:
- Supervise children when trick-or-treating.
- Send older kids off in large groups, and only to neighborhoods you know.
- Inspect your children’s candy before they dig in.
