You’re on Vacation; Your Appliances Aren’t
Just because you’re taking a break, that doesn’t mean your home appliances are. Many continue to operate even when no one is in the house.
You won't save money simply by unplugging your TV, computer, audio/video and other sensitive electronic devices. You will be turning your air conditioning thermostat off rather than simply raising the setting (which also helps); turning off your water heater; and using a timer or photo control system for indoor and outdoor lights rather than leaving them on full time. Make sure your refrigerator and freezer doors are tightly closed and, if you'll be away long, empty the fridge, disconnect it from the power outlet, clean it and keep the door open.
By adding up the average kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity your appliances consume each month, you can estimate how much money you can save while you’re away on vacation. (Consumption depends on the individual use and the condition of the appliance.)
