- Don’t use electrical appliances around wet areas like bathtubs, sinks and hot tubs.
- Dry your hands before using electrical appliances.
- Keep electric heaters on level surfaces and 6-8 feet from furniture, curtains and draperies.
- Use childproof covers for outlets.
- Only insert electrical plugs into outlets.
- Inspect electrical cords and extension cords for wear and tear.
- Flickering lights, unusual smells and power interruptions could be signs that there is a problem – check all appliances and panels to find the source of the problem.
- Stay clear of power lines at all times. Never attempt to repair lines yourself.
- Pay special attention to power sources when making home repairs and avoid contact between aluminum ladders and power lines.
- Never attempt to remove kites, tree limbs or other objects from power lines on your own, call your power supplier.
- Stay clear of transformers. Do not attempt to open the door of one of these transformers. If you find a door unlocked, call Cobb EMC immediately at 770-429-2100.
- Cobb EMC customers, please call Cobb EMC safety manager at 770-429-2100 for instructions on the proper installation of generators. Improperly installed generators can cause safety risk to electric utility employees.
- Operate power generators outdoors to eliminate exposure to hazardous fumes.
- Store gasoline and other flammable liquids outside and away from heat and electrical sources.
- Never refuel while the generator is running. Turn off and let cool for at least 10 minutes to minimize the danger of fire.
- Keep flashlights and extra batteries around the house.
- Keep bottled water, canned foods, and a manual can opener readily available.
- If you smell natural gas – leave your home immediately and call us from a phone at another location. Do not use your cell phone! Arcing or sparks could ignite gases.
- Don’t store cleaning supplies, paint or chemicals near natural gas appliances, such as water heaters, dryers, stoves, or furnaces.
Prevent Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
The effects of carbon monoxide poisoning are difficult to detect. Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, tasteless, and poisonous gas.
- Keep chimneys, heating vents, and furnaces clean and maintained by professionals.
- Install carbon monoxide detectors throughout your home.
How to help someone who's been involved in an electrical accident
- Don't touch a person who has been electrocuted and is still in contact with a power line.
- Don't attempt to move the power line.
- Call 911 immediately.
