Cobb EMC warns of scams aimed at utility customers

Report a scam

Cobb EMC is warning residential and commercial members to be on high alert for phone scammers who claim they are with the utility and demand immediate payment or threaten immediate disconnection.

“Our neighboring utilities have seen this scam as recently as this week, and we want to make our members aware of the latest ploy to obtain quick cash and personal information,” said Leslie Thompson of Cobb EMC.

In this most recent scam, scammers manipulate outbound telephone numbers so the call appears to come from a customer’s utility. They then demand immediate payment through a fraudulent phone system or through debit/credit/gift card or cash.

“Cobb EMC employees will never make threatening phone calls demanding immediate payment over the phone or in person at your property,” said Thompson. “Please exercise caution, and if you have any doubts about a call, hang up and call Cobb EMC directly at 770-429-2100.”

Cobb EMC members can always verify their account balance on the electric cooperative’s free app, on the cooperative’s automated payment phone line (855-730-8714) or at www.cobbemc.com
