Be Storm-Ready: How to Prepare Before, During, and After Severe Weather
At Cobb EMC, your safety is our top priority, especially when severe weather strikes. While we work hard to deliver reliable power year-round, storms can sometimes cause unexpected outages. That’s why we’ve created a comprehensive guide to help you stay safe and prepared before, during, and after a storm.
🌪️ Before the Storm: Plan Ahead
Planning in advance can make all the difference. Here’s how to get started:
- Build an Emergency Kit: Stock up on essentials like bottled water, non-perishable food, flashlights, batteries, a manual can opener, pet supplies, and moist towelettes.
- Prepare for Medical Needs: If you or a loved one relies on electricity for medical devices or refrigerated medication, talk to your healthcare provider about a backup plan.
- Consider a Generator: If you’re thinking about buying a generator, check out our generator guide to find the right size and learn how to use it safely.
⚡ During and After the Storm: Stay Safe
Storms can leave behind more than just damage, they can create hidden dangers. Keep these safety tips in mind:
- Avoid Downed Power Lines: Always assume a downed line is live. Stay far away and call Cobb EMC immediately at 770-429-2100 if you see a downed power line.
- Monitor Outages: Visit our Outage Center for real-time updates. Report power outages easily by sending a text. If summer storms interrupt your service, text the word "OUT" to 898-362 and report your outage.
- Food Safety: A full freezer can keep food cold for up to 48 hours if unopened. Check out USDA guidelines to know what’s safe to eat.
